This concert will be announced and explained piece-by-piece from stage. It will spring from the music of Telemann, who was a contemporary and friend of J.S. Bach, and a fantastic composer. Telemann wrote music for occasions of all sorts — including casual ones, like this evening at Vault Virginia. There was a term for this sort of casually-contextualized music: “Tafelmusik”, or ‘Table Music’, which was written for feasts or banquets; Telemann expanded the genre to include a (rather pricey) subscription for interested listeners and musicians.
Taking this as a cue, we will present a mix of Telemann and Bach, and works of interest to the musicians, exploring what’s on the collective agenda.
