TIMOTHY SUMMERS
violin and viola

Violinist Timothy Summers is co-director of the Charlottesville Chamber Music Festival, which he also co-founded in 2000, and has performed as a solo, chamber, and orchestral musician across North America and Europe. Recently, he has performed with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra on both violin and viola at the Aix-en-Provence festival and at venues across Europe and in South America, and he will be second concertmaster of the Århus Symfoni in Denmark beginning August 2007 . Mr. Summers also served as concertmaster of the Juilliard Orchestra for its 1998 recording of concertos with Itzhak Perlman, and was a concertmaster of the Spoleto Festival Orchestra in Spoleto, Italy, in 1999. He has toured France and Germany with the Peter Sellars opera company, and has been a participant at music festivals across the United States, including those in Taos, Tanglewood, Banff, Sarasota, Richmond, Staunton, and Token Creek, Wisconsin. Mr. Summers was for several years a participant in the Emmanuel Music Bach Cantata cycle in Boston; performances with Emmanuel Music include a solo appearance with Seiji Ozawa as conductor.

Mr. Summers spent the 2005-2006 year as artist-in-residence at the Danish Institute of Electroacoustic Music in Århus, funded by a grant from the Fulbright Commission, and has worked for several years on improvisation and computer programming projects with Steven Nachmanovitch. He has also worked as a teacher and developer of educational mathematics software at the University of Virginia's Center for Technology and Teacher Education.
Mr. Summers holds an A.B. from Harvard University in English and American Literature and an M.M. in violin Performance from the Juilliard School. He was a student of Ronald Copes and Robert Mann at the Juilliard School, Mark Rush at the University of Virginia, James Buswell at New England Conservatory, and Robert Levin at Harvard University.
